2025 IT Outlook: Where Do Canadian Businesses Stand on Technology?
- Is your organization ready to leverage artificial intelligence (AI)?
- Are you adequately protected against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks?
- Do your cloud systems comply with data sovereignty requirements and new legal obligations?
These questions are at the heart of the 2025 IT Outlook, published by Groupe Novipro in collaboration with IBM and Léger [1]. Now in its 9th edition (2025), the report highlights the major technology trends reshaping the IT landscape in Canada and reveals a clear dynamic: Canadian organizations must strike a balance between innovation, productivity, and security.
Security: A Top Priority for 2025
While AI continues to attract growing investment, security remains one of the top three challenges for Canadian businesses.
- 33% of IT decision-makers see cybersecurity as the primary concern, while 34% of non-IT leaders focus more on modernizing solutions.
- This gap highlights a critical need: aligning IT leadership with other departments to avoid unbalanced decisions between innovation and protection.
AI Leads the Way in Investment
For the first time, AI is the top investment priority in Canada.
- 30% of companies plan to invest in AI over the next two years—surpassing cloud computing (29%) and security solutions (23%).
- In the technology, media, and telecommunications sectors, that number jumps to 92%.
- Main objectives: boosting productivity (53%) and cutting costs (41%).
Globally, AI investment is projected to rise from USD 120 billion in 2023 to USD 900 billion by 2027.
Cloud Adoption: An Essential Transition
- 55% of Canadian companies plan to migrate to the cloud within the next two years.
- However, 64% feel constrained by their reliance on major U.S. providers, raising concerns about data sovereignty and regulatory compliance (e.g., Quebec’s Law 25).
Talent Shortages Increase Pressure
The report notes that 78% of organizations face at least one IT workforce challenge.
- Recruiting, training, and retaining specialized talent is becoming just as crucial as adopting new technologies.
In Summary: Finding the Right Balance
The 2025 IT Outlook delivers a clear message:
- Security is a strategic investment, not just an operational expense.
- AI unlocks new potential, but must be implemented with solid governance.
- Cloud modernization and talent management are key to building long-term digital resilience.
