For several years now, we have been hearing a lot about the growth of low code/no code applications. More than just buzzwords, low code/no code has won over companies for its ease of use. According to a study carried out by Gartner in 2021 [1], 70% of new applications developed by companies will use low code or no code technologies by 2025, compared to less than 25% in 2020. Both technologies are therefore experiencing a boom.
What is low code/no code?
Low code is an approach to software development that allows teams to develop digital solutions and build enterprise applications with minimal coding. Low code development platforms provide users with a suite of tools, custom code components, and boilerplate scripts. Users can then develop new processes and applications efficiently, without having to write code and test scripts. These platforms offer a visual development environment with simple drag-and-drop capabilities. [2]
No code, also known as no code development, is a software development approach that allows you to create applications and websites without having to write a single line of code. Like low code, no code relies on the use of visual and drag-and-drop tools to design and customize applications, making the development process more accessible to people without extensive technical training. This way, companies can quickly develop applications without having to hire in-house developers.
Low code or no code therefore allows less technical people to participate in the development processes of custom applications in collaboration with their software development provider.
Can anyone develop low-code/no-code apps?
On paper, yes – provided that people have a minimum of ease with technology and knowledge of ergonomics and user experience. In English, we speak of Citizen Developers to refer to this new audience [3]. However, in practice, it is strongly recommended to call on an external IT team to obtain a professional result and for the implementation of the application in low code/no code. Companies, such as GTI, can take charge of this type of project to ensure its good direction and guide you in the technological choices.
By using an IT technology partner, you not only ensure that your custom no code or low code application is developed following industry best practices, but also that your partner trains your key employees, “Power Users”, thus giving you a certain autonomy. A significant advantage compared to so-called classic applications that require knowledge of a programming language.
Although low code/no code offers many advantages, it is still important to keep in mind that this type of application cannot be used for all projects. Indeed, it depends on the complexity of the desired functionalities.
In summary, no code/low code applications offer three major advantages for SMEs:
- Accelerated application development: low code/no code significantly reduces development and prototyping time. You can obtain a custom application in a few days instead of several weeks with “classic” coding.
- Ease of use allowing greater accessibility and agility. Your IT partner will be able to train your “Power Users” so that they acquire the necessary skills quickly, guaranteeing you better control and autonomy.
- Strengthened integration: the team that will use the application on a daily basis becomes the project manager and works closely with your external IT partner. Being involved from the start of the project, they feel more concerned and listened to, which will promote better adoption of the new application.
