FileMaker 15 is finally here!
15 May 2016
FileMaker creates a buzz with the release of their latest version, FileMaker 15. Many new features were added, making their latest Platform safer, more user-friendly, and improving performance.
Among the many new features of FileMaker 15, here are the highlights revolving around five primary themes:
Mobility
It is now finally possible to import and export from/to other apps and platforms such as iCloud and e-mails thanks to the upgraded extensions of FileMaker Go. The most recent mobility features also take better advantage of the iPhone and iPad hardware features. Just like icing on a cake for the Apple product users, Touch ID or passcode use is now available for easy access to your files while running FileMaker Go on your mobile. Android users will also be thrilled to know they can now run WebDirect on their devices without FileMaker Go using Chrome.
Security
A Concealed edit box is now up and running in order to protect private information you don’t want displayed on your device’s screen. It is ideal to keep passwords, PINs and credit cards numbers private. Add to that proactive security warnings sent within the Platform and an option in the Admin Console that can prevent the Server from hosting any apps that aren’t protected with passwords and you’ve got yourself the new and improved version of FileMaker 15 security features.
Performance
The latest version of the Platform is undoubtedly the most efficient. On the performance front, FileMaker has made noticeable improvements on several levels such as the Top call statistics logging, in order to quickly diagnose any slowdowns, and the Portal in-line progress bar. This last addition will help productivity by allowing users to work on the app concurrent to the filtering and sorting of data, independently from any other operations.
Automation and Integration
The developers are definitely well served with the addition of automatically Highlighted script errors when importing, copying and pasting. Users will also happily greet the scripting option that will surely come in handy.
Ease of use
Four new Starter Solutions were added to the existing 16, including contacts, inventory, content management and tasks available under the basic Get Started option. It is also now possible to use the web-based Help offline with a quick and easy download. In addition, the Platform will, from now on, advise clients and users that an updated version is available and with the simple touch of a button, the new version will be downloaded and replace the previous one.
Licencing
It is impossible not to mention the new licensing system introduced trough FLT, FileMaker Licensing for Teams, which will no longer be billed according to the number of devices accessing the Platform. The annual billing is now based on the number of users, from a scale of five to a hundred and more. They will each have access to the three products through a server that connects them all, also included in the package.
The purchase of FLT includes:
- FileMaker Go for iOS devices
- FileMaker WebDirect for web browsers
- FileMaker Pro for Mac and Windows (the Advanced version for developers must be purchased separately)
- FileMaker Server
Finally, FileMaker seems to have stepped up their game once again with the release of the fifteenth edition of the Platform. It is now up to all of us, users, to see if reality meets expectations.
