FileMaker Developer Conference 2016: Day 3

Third day at the FileMaker Developer Conference 2016 for our colleague Jocelyn Ostiguy. The summary of another busy day.

Best practices for developer-friendly applications

To start the day: "Building Developer – Friendly Custom Apps" by Makah Encarnacao from Soliant Consulting shared the best practices about documentation, scripting, windows management and naming conventions for solutions in order to be more developer-friendly. Jocelyn was quite proud because the majority of the presented elements already were internal practices at GTI.

Two disappointing conferences

Second presentation of the day: "The Math of Visual Design" given by Alexis Allen from the blog DesigningFileMaker.com that we had the opportunity to see last year in Montreal at the "Conférence québécoise des développeurs FileMaker 2015". Unfortunately, the conference left Jocelyn unsatisfied; the concepts presented having already been mastered. He decided to try something else.

The conference "Deploying and Configuring Custom Mobile Apps using MDM", however, was also disappointing. Being more similar to a sales presentation for the MDM tool than a real knowledge sharing. Impression shared by many other attendees.

The Doug West’s show

In the afternoon: "Excelisys: Tantalazing Tips-n-Tricks from the Trenches" presented by Doug West, VP of product development at Excelisys, renowned personality among FileMaker developers for his ingenious tricks on the platform. What a performance! Very dynamic presenter, he offered participants a wealth of tips and advice on custom applications. Having used some of his suggestions in the past, Jocelyn had the opportunity to meet him after the presentation.

An effective development communication

Last session of the day: "Frictionless UX Hacks: No Programming Required" by Susan Proper, President of DBHQ and co-author of several books on FileMaker addressed the importance of communication in the documentation of specifications, customer test instructions and user guides, as well as in interfaces and user interactivity elements.

To close that third day on a high note, a bus travel to an unknown location for the attendee party!
